Padding between columns in footer

I am trying to create in a four column footer similar to that used at *Login to see link four photographs in a footer column, using the footer widget i have inserted “Arbitrary text or HTML” into the column with the following code to test
[columns] [span6]
[/span6][span6]
[/span6][/columns]
[columns] [span6]
[/span6][span6]
[/span6][/columns]
This seems to work however there appears to be too much padding between the images, is there a way of reducing the padding or am i going about this the wrong way.
