Blog post excerpts and images

We’re beginning to post to our blog, but are having continuity issues between the excerpt post on the home page and the blog page. We seem to be able to add an image to the post via “add media”, and the image appears in the full post on the blog page (Updates), but does not appear in the summary on the home page. If we add a Featured Image to the post it appears on the home page summary but not on the blog (Updates) page where the full post is.
The listing of the blog post is done using the shortcode [blog_posts items=”1″ orderby=”date” cat=”updates”].
What is the best way to ensure media entered into a blog post is visible both on the home page and the full blog post page?
