Image sizes / Media settings

Good Afternoon,
One of our sites has become quite large and having looked around this seems mainly due to the images.
We don’t make use of some of the images sizes WordPress creates by default and wanted to stop these versions being created altogether to save space.
1. Do any of your themes make use of these extra images / am I ok to stop them being created without breaking functionality?
2. Also does any of your themes create versions of the images for it’s own use? I’ve heard some themes do this. It would be helpful to know what is used where and should I not use them, how I stop them being created.
Any other tips that may help reduce site size is appreciated!
