Make search expand

This feels like something I have probably just missed in the Theme Options somewhere but I just can’t find a solution.

I’m using Ascend theme and I’m trying to find a way to make the Search function in the Header Extras not open as a pop-up/overlay and instead expand or “slide in” when you click the looking glass.

Just to visualise, this is what it looks like by default:

And when I click the looking glass to search, the whole window is greyed out and this pops up on top (looks a lot like the Searchlight search in MacOS):

Is there a solution whereby the search field instead expands up in the header?
