Using Non-Google Fonts with Ascend

The little I know about this is that if I want to use non-google fonts, that I need to upload a font set to the server — somewhere.
Is there a way to use non-google fonts with Ascend that will allow me to find and modify their appearance with the Typography settings, as I would normally do with Google fonts, or will I need to use CSS for everything related to non-google fonts? Also, is there any sort of general thought as to the disadvantages of using fonts this way?
