Split Content Alignment and Width

Using the Ascend Split Content Widget, I find that if I have the image on the left, it leaves a huge margin between the left edge of the image and the left edge of the content area. The whole image and content seems to float to the right. If I align the image on the right (which I don’t want to do) it all aligns better on the left, but it leaves too much space on the right. I’ve also got a “read more” plugin working in there, but this issue remains with or without it.
How can I get this to sit better on the page?
