Images advise

I am looking at many of many old images for my eCommerce store (jewelry) that was very large a few years ago. The base files were often over 100kb and I did not optimize before I uploaded them. I have optimize them since then but they are still like 50 kb or so. I am not sure how to handle it should I just delete them and uploaded much smaller versions to start with. If I delete them will I start getting errors from goggle for images not found. I probably have well over 300 images and they have all their different thumbnails. I was just looking at my media from the very oldest and man these are really large compared to the size of my newer images after I learned more about what to do. Any suggestion I am looking for ideas.
