Featured image aspect ratio adjustment for mobile?

I have a bit of a odd issue, and I understand this may not be something that can be changed- regardless, I figure it’d be worth asking.
Featured images on posts show up perfectly fine on desktop (where a 1:1 crop is perfectly fine), but they look rather wonky on mobile (lacking in width).
Images for context:
Desktop: 1:1 crop- looks fine, perfectly flush, wonderful.
Mobile: On mobile, the 1:1 crop doesn’t work as well; you can see the empty space on each side of the image.
How can I make the images take up the full available width on mobile? I’m comfortable with creating a new image size/type specially for this if need be.
