Shorten the Product titles on the Front Page to 40 characters

I have featured products on my front page. It’s a problem for the layout that some product titles are longer than orhers. I wonder if it’s possible to pull the first 40 characters from the title, and appends for instance ‘…’ to indicate that the title was shortened. I guess I need to manipulate the_title() function on the content-products.php page, but I don’t know how
