Portfolio list images width

Ben,
Why is it that no matter what size of image i have uploaded and set the for the featured image of a portfolio item, in responsive mobile view with browser width of 479 pixels or less the source image width is always 300 pixels which causes the image to be blurry because at the browser width of 479 the image is displaying at 429px which is scaling up from the 300px width?
