Cannot validate API Key

Hi, I have one site where I cannot validate the api key and therefore the Ascend theme is stuck at v 1.5.8 Would that stop the validation. The current message I get is..
Connection failed to the License Key API server. Make sure your host servers php version has the curl module installed and enabled.
The site is on php 7.3
If 1.5.8 will stop the validation can I download the latest version from the member portal and upload it without losing settings?
