Need Portfolio in the Home page showing only categories (without subcategories)

Hi,
I’m trying to show in my Home-page only the portfolio’s pages of the main categories.
I don’t want to show the subcategories.
And Then I would like to choose one and going down in that category (opening the portfolio page filtered by that category).
How can i do this?
