Content not loading

I’m having issues since updating to WP 5.6. Page content isn’t loading (seems OK on mobile), sometimes can be forced by hitting reload a couple of times, but inconsistently. The URLs appear ok. In WP page edit one of the pages returns the error message ‘Updating failed. The response is not a valid JSON response.’ on manual update and on autosave.
Apologies in advance, I can’t tell if it’s a WP /database issue or Kadence – the error message doesn’t help me to pin it down. I have reinstalled from a back-up and the database seems clean.
