I recently updated all of the images on a clients home page to webp to see how it affected the page speed score. He told me that he then couldn’t see any of the images. It turns out, he is on an older Mac OS running Safari 13.1.2 which doesn’t support webp. I’ve tried to research it, but it’s difficult to get any stats, but I believe this means about 5% of web users cannot see webp images.

So I have two questions…

1. Are people just using webp and not bothering with older version Safari users?

2. Is there a way, within the theme, to serve webp images to everyone else and jpegs to Safari v13 and below?
