Portfolio carousel + Home Slider

Hello, I have two questions:

1 – I have seen that the virtue premium theme portfolio carousel change the number of items showed depending on the screen size. For example in bigger screens the number of elements showed is like 5. How can I achieve this?

2 – The picture used for the home slider in the original theme are 2000 x 800 whereas the size of the revolution slider is 1170 x 800. Is there a general rule for choosing the size of the pictures in order to get theme fitted to the majority of the screens?
At the moment I am using 2000 + 1330 pictures and a revolution slider of 2000 x 1300, but I do not like how the slider change in bigger screen.
