Advanced Query Loop > Filter Dropdown result counts always 0

We are having troubles with the Filter Dropdown in an Advanced Query Loop. Our goal is to use the “Hide items when result count is zero” of the filter dropdown. Sadly the count is always 0 and no filter option is shown.

This is the setup / behavior:

We have an Advanced Query Loop that is limited to one custom post type and one category in a custom taxonomy.
The post type and category (product category) are applied correctly. The correct posts are shown in the initial query loop
The filter dropdown inside the Advanced Query Loop is limited to another custom taxonomy (product brands)
Without any further filter dropdown settings all brands show up. If we select a brand with no posts then no posts are shown, if we select a brand with posts the posts are shown correctly
We don’t want “empty” brands to appear in the filter dropdown. So we activate “Hide items when result count is zero”, but suddenly the filter dropdown is empty
If we disable “Hide items when result count is zero” and activate “Show result count” then all counts are 0. Even though there are brands that have posts and the query interface works as expected

Do you know how we can fix this? Tried re-indexing all queries multiple times, but no change.
