Cards setup question

Hi guys, I hope I am posting this in the right place (if not, my apologies). I would like to add a ‘news’ section on my landing page (just some updates and such that are not blog post material). I initially tried to made a category ‘news’ (category like you would do for blog posts) but whenever I add a post loop section, it automatically displays my blog posts.
So anyway, I was looking around in the design library and I think that ‘cards’ (like ‘cards 55’) would work. However, I cannot find any tutorial on how it works and to set it up. I mean, things like where I add the stuff that I want displayed in the cards sections.
Can anyone point me in the right direction for this? Thank you!
Oh and if you have another way/block I can use to display news (it should hold an option to see an image, a small bit of text and then a ‘read more’ option), I am all for it.
