IE8 and general image problems

Hi,
I noticed that my pictures and images look a bit awkward on different screens, for example they look extremely stretched and wide on big screens. Also, on some screens (even wide ones) the slider image on the homepage is not centered prperly so some text is cut off. What can be done about this?
Also, the site is not working on IE 8. Is this normal?
