Styling the Subtitle with CSS

Hi guys, just a really quick one, I’m trying to style the subtitle of the page. I’ve been trying to target a number of elements using Chrome dev tools, it shows me p.subtitle it looks so straight forward but nothing works.
Also the option to use a background colour doesn’t work for me, I most likely have something set to transparent that is preventing it…
