Portfolio Gallery – turn links into downloads

Hi,
We’re about to upload a ton more photos and I’d like to get straight on an issue with the links first.
Right now the links go to a post page for each image. I want to keep these nice-looking lightbox links, but when users click them, I just want the image to be downloaded. How could we do that? I was reading some of the posts in the support forum and it seems like I should have created this as a gallery instead of a portfolio to make that happen. Is that true? Would I still be able to retain the lightbox links the way they look currently?
