Getting the visitor to add additional information onto the contact form

I’ve hit a problem and need help, please:
We get a lot of questions from around the globe and after helping the customer with information the inedible reply-email is asking us for details about or customer service in what ever country they are in. And with different time zones, that can add a day or more to the mail exchange….

That’s why we would like to have a input field on the contact form where the potential customer has to add his country of residence.
Can I do that? And how?
Then we can answer the question before it is asked…

The inedible next question is, how would we make the field either optional or obligational?

(I suppose what ever solution there is for this problem, it would also enable me to add a sentence to explain the little maths problem the user has to solve. There are more newbies out there than you think. And they all seem to want to contact me 😏)
