Dropdown shop menu

Hello.
I would like to add the dropdown function some places on my site.
I want a dropdown from shopmenu in the primary menu to be a dropdown, showing different product categories, such as “stuff for kitchen” “stuff for livingroom” “stuff for bedroom” and so on. These categories should be able to be clicked on, and when clicking on etc. “stuff for kitchen” i want subcategories showing my product pictures of forks, knives, glasses, plates and so on.
I tried to make some categories and parent them into other categories, hoping it would show up as a dropdown menu, but it doesn’t work for me.
The way of clicking IN THE DROPDOWNMENU should be something like this; Shop –> Stuff for kitchen –> Glasses –> lots of product pictures of glasses.
Sorry for my bad english and lack of IT skills, but i hope you understand what i mean. Its a very basic problem i guess.
