Features image makes posts on home page disappear

When I add a featured image (in a new post, click featured image and upload) in my Virtue theme, it makes the post disappear on the home page. It’s like adding a featured image causes a glitch..? Or is there a different way I need to add the featured image? And for clarity, I want to add my own images to replace the default pencil pictures on the blog posts on the home page. What am I missing?
