Header Menu Hover Size

I’m needing to figure out how to change the hover size on my main menu. When you hover over the text, the hover color is the full width of the menu bar. I want to change it so that the hover color is smaller, for instance just a box over the text (like in the footer). I hope this makes sense.. Thanks in advance for all your help!
