Image width vs content width vs slider

Hi,
I need your help understanding and then setting things regarding my blog images :
1. I would like the mages to be the same width as the ext content in my articles, but I want to edit them prior to uploading them at the minimum size to save space. I am not sure what that width would be. I read around 600px, but it seems my content width is bigger… could you confirm which px width I shourl use for my images to be end to end same as the text?

2. If I set the same width for my images as for the content, what happens the day I am using a slider on my homepage or a full width image in the title area? will the image be stretched or white borders automatically used to fill the lack of material on the sides?

3. or should I keep my images at an approx 1200 px width so they fit a header/slider/title area, but then they are also super heavy even if compressed?

4. if my content width is indeed around 1000, is it possible to downsize it a bit while keeping the sidebar the same width it is now?
