Page header image & page title

I’d like to display the header background image on a page/post but not display the page/post title in the image. I’d like to display the title under the image, but still have the image displayed. In the blog options I set “Show the post title in head by default” off and set “Show the post title below the header” on… it put the title in the correct spot but the header image disappeared, much to my surprise?
