php files and Child Theme

Hello team,
I am using Ascend Premium and its child theme.
If I want to modify the header or footer with particularities, I guess I need an footer.php and header.php?
I am experimenting on this site, but my other blog, done by somebody else on a child theme, contains header, footer and functions.php files…
