Semi-transparent background to increase readability of light text

Hi Ben, Hannah and all,
I am trying to find a way to add a background block that lies beneath my light coloured body text, to increase its readability.
I have seen some websites where a semi-transparent block lies under the text paragraphs, and I want to achieve the same. I have a background image that I want to be able to see, hence the desire that the block is semi-transparent. The effect I am after is exactly like the background for the title and captions in the home slider.
