Virtue Premium Update to 4.3.9.

Hi!
I would like to update to the latest version of Virtue Theme. However, I don’t understand what this comment means: “Any customisations you have made to theme files will be lost. Please consider using child themes for modifications.”
I have made lots of changes since the latest update – and before the previous update as well. I didn’t use child themes for modification either.
Is it safe to update without losing the changes?
If not, what should I do? What are the “child themes”?
