Active and hover background in secondary menu

I have the background of my secondary navigation menu set to transparent and it works perfectly. However, the active page still displays a shaded background, same for when I hover over each items. Is there a way to remove this feature from active and hover, or at least make this shading as transparent as possible?

Also, can I change the color and/or transparency of the text background on a Virtue Image Menu Item?
