Adding Portfolio Except to Carousel Shortcode

Hi,
I am using the standard carousel shortcode ‘[carousel type=portfolio etc’ to display a set of Portfolio items. I have tried to add the except using the except=true command in the shortcode but nothing shows.
Is it possible to add this to the standard carousels?
