Advanced styling options not working

Hi there,
I selected for the main content background to be black, and the body background to be white. By body background I assumed that it would be the area of the page contains text and main content background I thought was everything around the page. Please let me know if I am adjusting the settings wrong or if this needs to be done with css instead. Thank you again for all of the help.
