Category Filter and Arrows

I love the category filter function on the shop and category pages. Very slick coding. Is there a way to filter categories that don’t have any products? Is there a way to filter this function, so I can select a predefined group of product categories? I know the point is for this to be dynamic, but my list is getting long, and I’d love to truncate it at top level categories.
Secondly, the navigation arrow indicators are always present even when my category only has one page of products on it. Shouldn’t the page 2 or 3, etc… arrow indicators be greyed out when there’s no second page to navigate to?
