Category searches act like there is a sidebar when there is not.

When I use a category menu item on my site, the result looks like the sidebar is present, even when it is not enabled. For example: *Login to see link looks like the space on the right side is allocated for the side bar. How can I set the general page template so that it is full width for all pages (archive search, category search, etc.)?
