Gallery item size and proportion

Hello,
I am having few issues with the Virtue gallery widget and would like to customize.
1. How can I change the gallery item size and proportion?
Image proportion is square for default. I need to make it rectangular.
2. Can I carry prev and next buttons outside the images so that they do not overlap the image?
