gradient behind transparent header

hello, is there a way i can add a sort of gradient behind my transparent header? i am wanting to only have this on my home page so that you can see a bit of a contrast between the slider images and the menu items.. im thinking something like this..
you see, they have the slight gradient that helps with the contrast.. do you have a recommendation?
