How to make main nav items shrink instead of wrap on desktop

I frequently find that when I’m building main navigation areas on sites, the default setting in the main nav has the menu items wrap onto two lines if ever the screen size is too small. I’d prefer if the main navigation was more responsive, and the text size or spacing shrunk to accommodate different screen sizes.
