How to use "Attributes" panel under widget styles?

I have looked through all of the documentation and forums, but I cannot find any instructions on how to use the “Attributes” section that is available above the “Layout” and “Design” sections on the right panel of all of the widgets.
There are two fields, one for “widget class” and one for “Css Styles”
How does one put these to use?
Please advise!
