Image Gallery doesn't follow instructions

Hello! I’m writing here because I couldn’t find the solution to my problem.

I created a portfolio post with 30 images. Some of them have different sizes but inside the settings I configured everything to work under the same size given.

Here are my settings:

If i set only the width, for some reason the images are cropped at the top and at the bottom and they look wider than they are. I already tried that.

And this is my particular problem: Some pictures show bigger than others. Even if I said that I wanted them smaller (800px on the large side)

Is there any solution besides resizing all the images to a smaller size? I’d rather keep them bigger for bigger screen resolutions, and lightbox viewing.
