Images not showing properly

in the virtue theme Home page I have added some content with images.
On the backend in WP, i have to make these images really big (the who we are image is 1000px wide) to show properly in chrome and Safari.
But doing this does not work in Firefox.
So while the image (made really big on the back end) show perfectly in chrome and Safari, they show HUGE in Firefox.
How come?
