license key

how is licencing handled for virtue theme – I got no license key for my purchase, did I? only a downloadable ZIP I think.
I usually show my customers two or three customized versions of his product, using copies (“unlicensed”) of different themes. nothing is published until then, just internal usage… when customer decides which theme he wants to use, he buys his license (before publishing his product) and we enter his key.
so to be clear, I use one downloaded theme for installing in multiple installations and then, when publishing, license is bought for… is this a problem with your licensing technique/-model? other themes deliver a key after buying, which the theme configuration asks for… or do you hardcode the licence key into the downloaded files – so my workflow would not fit?!
