Limit Excerpt on Blog

I would like to limit the length of my excerpt on my blog with a “Read More…” link the way theme limits it on its homepage. Since it’s showing everything I write in my excerpt which is visually distracting. Long excerpt is also extending beyond the post thumbnail (when post summary is set to Portrait Image).
