Linking to a file from the Latest Blog Posts

Hi,
I’ve searched for posts about this, but couldn’t find anything. What I’m trying to do is have it so that on the Latest Blog Posts on my homepage (called Recent Publications), when you click the thumbnail, it links to a file uploaded in my media section (specifically, a PDF). Also, I have the PDF file linked in my blog post, but that link is shown as just plain text on the home page (loses its formatting).
My goal is to keep it looking like it currently looks on my site, but to be able to click the thumbnail image and have it point to the PDF file, rather than linking to the blog post. I’ve played around with the widgets and page builder, but haven’t found something that will accomplish this. Can anyone offer any advice? Thank you!
