Listing Portfolio items under Secondary Navigation

The title says it all really; I’d like to list Portfolio items under my secondary navigation (main bar across the top of the site); the secondary navigation corresponds with the Portfolio Type and all Portfolio items are assigned to one of the main headings of the secondary nav.
I see that I can manually add menu items via Custom Links, but is there a more intuitive/automatic way to do it so that my staff don’t get confused?
