Lost settings with update

We have Virtue Premium, using a modest child theme. We updated and lost all of our settings. We’re trying to get our hosting company to restore a backup (slow going on the holiday weekend).

We’re wondering what we did wrong? Any ideas how to prevent that from happening in the future?
