Main menu position and formatting

Some help please chaps!
This is my dilemma.
1. I want my main menu somewhere near the top of the screen.
2. I want the menu bar to stretch right across the screen, but I don’t want the menu items spread across the screen.
3. I also want a mobile menu icon.
Is putting this menu in the top bar the only way I can meet the criteria? I tested it and the main issue was the formatting in Virtue Theme Options > Menu Settings did not get propagated to the top bar. Sad face! If this is the solution what sort of CSS would I need to style it?
