Meta description on Woocommerce product category page

Hi,
I have a short question. I use WPSeo and it’s not possible to define meta tags for categories there. Now the description of the first product is used as a meta description.
I’d like to set custom descriptions via functions.php in a child theme, works great with og-tags already (using if(is_product_category( ‘porzellan’ )) etc)
When I try the same with meta tags, it dosen’t work and I dont know why (even if WPSEO is deactivated, in that case there’s no metatag at all).
Can you tell me a simple way to add meta tags via functions.php? Is there even an option in the theme somewhere?
