mobile menu dropdown style on touch

Is there a way to change the style of a dropdown menu item for a mobile menu on touch? I have set the mobile hover and active font color in the theme options and it works on hover when I shrink the screen down on the desktop. But on an iPhone there is no change in color when I tap a dropdown menu item. The active menu item does change to the specified color.
