Multi Footer background colors

Am using virtue pro theme style 1 and wanted to make the lower part of the footer across the width of the page starting with footer credits a different color from the rest of the footer above it. I tried going into the footer template with no success and also tried the custom css under the advanced settings with no success. How can this be done.
Secondly should I be using a child theme to do things such as this?
