Portfolio item not to be featured on Home Page

When I add a Portfolio item and set a Portfolio type. There is no featured item for this portfolio as I do not want thi sportfolio item to be displayed on the Home page under Featured project slider. But the item still appears in the featured slides. My issue is : “I do not want all portfolio items to be featured in home page.” How can I achieve this. Help appreciated.
